Obituary of Takako Jane Shimokura
With profound sadness we announce the sudden passing of Takako Jane Shimokura on Dec 29 2018 age 80 in Vancouver B.C. Jane will be forever remembered by Howard her life partner of 56 years, children Gregg (Mary Anne) Karen and Gayle (David) grandchildren Michael, Grace, Justin and Maya sisters Kay Domae (Stan) and Micki Nakashima (Luke).
Born in Vancouver Jane lived through the dark chapter of the Japanese Canadian internment during WWII in Tashme and New Denver and returned to Vancouver in 1952. She graduated from UBC with BA and BSW degrees. Jane’s lifelong journey with Howard began with their marriage in 1962. Following Howard’s graduation from UBC she and Howard moved to Ottawa the first of several moves while raising three children. After Howard’s retirement in Austin TX Jane and Howard returned to Vancouver in 2002 after an absence of 39 years and reengaged with family and friends in Jane’s beloved birthplace.
Jane was an expert seamstress, tailor of ladies’ jackets, keen quilter of Japanese themed quilts and placemats, and avid knitter of hats. For years she volunteered for the National Nikkei Museum and Cultural Centre (NNMCC) Auxiliary and donated many of her quilts, placemats and hundreds of knitted hats she made every year to the Centre. Jane was a fiercely competitive duplicate bridge player and travelled extensively with Howard to bridge tournaments. She was a voracious reader of mysteries, loved classical music, jazz, movies, theater and opera and looked forward to the Vancouver Jazz and Film Festivals every year.
Jane was a very generous person who always made time for family and friends and especially her grandchildren whom she loved dearly. Jane made it her mission to meet new friends and engage socially wherever she and Howard moved to and graciously hosted visitors from all over the world. Jane’s famous meals were the centerpiece of every family celebration and she always sent her guests home with a package.
We will miss Jane dearly.
A Celebration of Life will be held on February 24 at 2 pm at NNMCC 6688 Southoaks Crescent Burnaby BC. Donations may be made in Jane’s memory to the NNMCC (http://centre.nikkeiplace.org/) or to a charity of your choice.
